CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — The Benton County sheriff's office says an 89-year-old woman was struck and killed Tuesday while crossing a road to pick up mail from her mail box.
The woman, Hannelore Zimmerman, was dead when emergency crews arrived at the home south of Corvallis. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that the 65-year-old driver of the car was not injured and that she immediately stopped and called 911.
Benton County Sheriff's Office Capt. Greg Ridler says the cause of the accident is under investigation but that drugs, alcohol and excessive speed are not believed to be contributing factors.
