GRESHAM, Ore. -- A man was shot dead around 11 p.m. Monday night in Gresham.
Police on Tuesday identified him as Makeitho "Tito" De Monz Herring, 37, of Portland.
Investigators believe Herring was shot in the parking lot of the Pine Square Apartments at 665 NE 178th Ave. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Although the identity of the shooter is not known, the initial investigation suggests Herring may have been familiar with the person who shot him. This case does not appear to be gang-related or tied to any other recent gang incidents in the surrounding area," said detective John Rasmussen with the Gresham Police Bureau.
"With an apartment complex, we have dozens and dozens of potential witnesses," added Lt. Claudio Grandjean.
One neighbor reported hearing a group of people fighting in the street shortly before the shooting.
“I was looking out my bedroom window and all of a sudden I hear a pop and I see a flash from around the corner over by the playground," she told KGW. "I'm like, that's a gunshot.”
Marcus Guyton said he heard screams, then looked out to see Herring's mom and friends huddled around his body.
”Its crazy. I don’t’ know how you can take somebody’s life like that," Guyton said.
Anyone with information that may help investigators was urged to call Gresham police at 503-618-2719 or 1-888-989-3505.
