Driver leads Portland police on 8-mile chase

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 31-year-old man was arrested after leading police on an eight-mile car chase that started in Southeast Portland and ended near Oatfield on Monday morning.

At about 4:48 a.m., Portland police officers attempted to stop Jonathan Delano Swenson, who was driving east on Southeast Stark Street near 92nd Avenue. Instead of stopping, Swenson swerved around the officer and fled south on Interstate 205.

Police pursued Swenson, who exited I-205 at Southeast Johnson Creek Boulevard. Spike strips were deployed in front of Swenson, flattening two tires on his car.

Police then used a PIT maneuver to spin Swenson's car and end the pursuit at Highway 224 and Southeast Johnson Road.

Sweson was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail. He is being held on a parole violation and is also facing charges of attempt to elude by vehicle and reckless driving.

Two other occupants of the car were released at the scene.
