Traffic stop leads to 20-pound cocaine bust

PORTLAND, Ore. – Police seized about 20 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop in Portland Friday afternoon.

Officers pulled over a speeding 2003 BMW X5 on northbound Interstate 5 near the Corbett Avenue exit at around 2:30 p.m.

Police say the driver gave officers consent to search the car with a drug dog. Another adult and a child were also in the car.

The dog alerted police to the presence of narcotics. When Drugs and Vice Division officers arrived, they found a hidden compartment with about 20 pounds of cocaine inside.

The driver, 30-year-old Mauricio Gomez Alvarez, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a federal hold with additional charges pending.

The estimated value of the seized cocaine was $320,000.
