Timbers fans line up for Sat. Sounders match

PORTLAND -- Saturday is a big match between the Portland Timbers and their archrivals the Seattle Sounders. It's early in the season, but this is a critical matchup for both teams.

The Timbers are desperately searching for their first win of the year.

Many Timbers Army fans started lining up Thursday night to get a numbered wristband for the general admission area. The game kicks off at noon Saturday.

Every Major League Soccer match between the Timbers and Sounders has been on national television.

This is the rivalry game of the MLS, said Timbers fan Gary, who was in line for hours. There isn't anything bigger than Seattle-Portland. I don't think that anybody else has a bigger rivalry game. This dates back to 1975 when the two teams met in minor league soccer and it just carried on. It's getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

Portland and Seattle have met eight times during the regular season in Major League Soccer. Seattle holds a 3-2 edge with three ties. The Timbers beat the Sounders in last year's playoffs.

The Timbers Army will team with the Red Cross to collect donations for the residents affected by the deadly mudslide up in western Washington.
