Seattle teachers cancel Black Lives Matter demonstration

Teachers at John Muir Elementary in Seattle cancelled a black empowerment event after threats were posted online related to the event.

The school had scheduled a “Black Men Uniting to Change the Narrative” celebration for Friday, September 16 with community leaders and role models in attendance.

Seattle Police is working with the school district to investigate the threat, and police will have a presence at the elementary school Friday to ensure safety of students and staff. Police had already planned to be a part of the celebration.

John Muir teachers announced last week they planned to wear Black Lives Matter t-shirts in class on Friday to show they care and start conversations about race.

“I think we are going to get some pushback from the t-shirts, but I think that is an invitation for families in the community that might not agree with us to come in and have a discussion with us,” John Muir teacher JR Lorca told KING 5 last week.
