A 16-year-old Salem Academy student died after an off-road vehicle crash Sunday evening, according to officials.
Kate Christofferson,16, was a passenger in a Yamaha Rhino that rolled over in a hazelnut orchard after the driver lost control of the all-terrain utility vehicle, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. She died instantly.
Deputies arrived in the 7000 block of 54th Avenue NE near Salem around 5:40 p.m. Sunday and found Christofferson and the 17-year-old male driver, who was transported to Salem Hospital. He was treated and later released.
Neither the driver nor Christofferson was wearing seatbelts or a helmet at the time of the crash, according to officials.
"This is a tragic incident but a time for us to reflect as a community and ensure that when we are operating off-road vehicles that we are utilizing safety precautions like seat belts and helmets," said Sergeant Todd Moquin of the Traffic Safety Team.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office said it does not intend to take any action against the 17-year-old driver.
