PPS apologizes after students left stranded in Clatskanie

School bus strands Portland students

PORTLAND, Ore. – Students from Jefferson High School were stranded Friday night after a bus never showed up to bring them home from Clatskanie.

The botched pick-up involved First Student, a transportation provider that Portland Public Schools has used for many years.

The students were supposed to be brought home at 9:30 p.m. after a dance performance more than 60 miles away in Clatskanie, but they had to call their parents to pick them up.

PPS spokesman Dave Northfield apologized for the mix-up.

“This is an unacceptable level of service that we're getting from our contract bus company right now and we're going over that with First Student and trying to come up with solutions to try to prevent this from happening again,” he said.

First Student did not say what caused the error, but a spokesperson apologized and said changes are coming.
