Portland Pedal Power named city's best delivery service

Bike company wins award for delivery service

PORTLAND, Ore. -- You've probably seen them.

Bicycles rolling through the streets of Portland with huge boxes sporting advertising on the back. There's a good chance they belong to Portland Pedal Power, which means inside those boxes is food.

The company started in 2009  with just two cyclists and two bikes. Now it employs 15 people and has a 14-bike fleet.

But along with providing Portlanders speedy deliveries, the company also prides itself on being sustainable.

Co-owner Jenn Dederich says the company keeps eleven tons of carbon dioxide out of the air every year by cycling instead of driving.

The company also cuts down on waste it sends to the landfill by using reusable trays for food and encouraging family style meals instead of individually wrapped ones.

"We focus on making the office experience sustainable," said Dederich.

The efforts are paying off. Portland Pedal Power was voted best delivery service in Portland in Willamette Week's "Best of Portland."

Dederich says she is honored by the recognition. She hopes one day to expand the business, possibly even take it across the country.
