Portland firefighters wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland firefighters are wearing pink during the month of October to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

On Sunday morning, firefighters tried on the shirts that they bought. The public can purchase the pink shirts, as well, for $25. All proceeds go to a local non-profit Breast Friends, whose goal is to provide emotional support for people battling breast cancer.

Co-founder Becky Olson overcame breast cancer three times. A couple weeks ago, she was diagnosed for the fourth time. Olson said a support system is so important.

“When we see people like the firefighters, they are heroes in everybody’s mind, right? It’s nothing better,” Olson said. “To see them supporting us and wearing pink, we know that says to us, is that they’ve got us. They are letting us know that they are there for us, and support us, and help fight this disease with us.”

Shirts can be purchased at the Firefighters Union Hall, located at 4530 SE 67th Ave (Near SE Foster Rd), Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. They've already sold more than 300 shirts.
