Portland AME Church honors Charleston shooting victims

Local AME Church stands with Charleston

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Northeast Portland held a moment of reflection Sunday to pay tribute to the victims of the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina.

During the Sunday morning worship service, churchgoers wore black ribbons to remember the lives of the nine people who were shot to death Wednesday night.

"The community coming together in love shows the best example that God has before us," church member Bobbi Smith said.

The congregation lit a candle for each victim and a single candle for peace and justice.

"We're honoring them in solidarity to help the world know that we're together," Smith said. "It feels like unity. It feels like we're all of one accord. It's a wonderful place to be."
