Pedestrian was lying on tracks when hit by MAX trains, police say

Police determine MAX pedestrian death a suicide

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man killed on TriMet MAX tracks Friday morning was lying on the tracks when he was hit, police said.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 6:13 a.m. to MAX tracks near Southeast 17th Avenue and McLoughlin Boulevard on a report of a man down on the tracks.

The call came from a MAX operator, who said the man appeared to be dead. Arriving crews confirmed the death. A train ahead of him struck the man first, police said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story reported that the cause of the man's death was suicide, but police have not made that determination.
