Driver dies after crashing twice, car catches fire in Salem

Salem police are investigating a crash that left one person dead just before midnight Friday.

At first, a non-injury crash occurred with another vehicle near the intersection of Portland Road NE and Kale Street NE late Friday night, according to Salem Police Department.

One of the drivers sped away from the scene of the crash, heading south on Portland Road. His car then hit an SUV with five people inside near the intersection of Portland Road and Ward Drive NE.

The driver's vehicle left the roadway and caught fire with the driver inside. The driver died at the scene.

Three of the five occupants of the other vehicle were taken to Salem Health with non-life threatening injuries.

The deceased driver has not been identified, according to officials.

No other information is available at this time. The deceased driver will not be identified until next of kin are notified.
