Weekend road closures could cause heavy traffic in Portland

Section of I-5 closed for bridge project

PORTLAND, Ore. – Expect major delays if you’re driving around Portland this weekend.

The combination of interstate and bridge closures could make for a frustrating couple of days for drivers.

Interstate 5 closure

Southbound Interstate 5 was closed from the Marquam Bridge to North Broadway again this weekend. The closure began Friday night at midnight and is scheduled to end by 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Drivers are being diverted to southbound I-405 to reach I-5 south of downtown. A lane of I-5 south remains open for drivers to get to eastbound I-84, according to Mike Pullen, a Multnomah County spokesman.

Drivers headed south from Washington should consider using Interstate 205.

The I-5 closure is the second of four weekend shutdowns to allow construction crews to make concrete repairs under the Burnside Bridge, which crosses over lanes of the freeway. At the same time, Oregon Department of Transportation crews will work on the closed section of freeway.

The remaining weekend I-5 closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and end at 4:30 a.m. Monday on the following weekends:

  • Friday, May 5 to Monday, May 8 (northbound)
  • Friday, May 12 to Monday, May 15 (northbound)

Morrison Bridge closure

The Morrison Bridge has reopened to eastbound travelers after the bridge was closed over the weekend for work on the lift span deck replacement project. The bridge will reopen for westbound traffic at 10 p.m. Sunday.
