Person of interest in Portland woman's murder caught in California

Portland woman victim of homicide

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ore. -- Authorities announced Thursday afternoon they have captured a person of interest in the murder of a Portland woman who was found dead in rural Columbia County.

Jesse Allen Lane, 28, was wanted in connection with the death of Apache Rose Hightower. Police in Santa Barbara took him into custody Thursday for questioning.

He is awaiting an extradition hearing scheduled for Friday.

Hightower, 24, was found on Sept. 20 down an embankment by a passerby on Pittsburg Road, about a mile from Salmonberry Lake. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Portland police had received a report that Hightower was missing, but didn't register her as a missing person because she was an adult and they had no indication she was in danger, said Sgt. Pete Simpson.
