PORTLAND, Ore. – The city has a vision for redeveloping the area the main post office will be leaving, whether Amazon builds a 2nd headquarters there or not.
And the odds are Amazon won’t.
The city’s development wing, Prosper Portland, is now seeking applications from developers interested in the Broadway Corridor Project. It’s a 32-acre lot that includes the already city-purchased post office site, set for redevelopment.
The vision is to create a high density, multi-use neighborhood at the base of the Broadway Bridge. It would include affordable housing, and be situated near Amtrak’s Union Station and other transportation options.
In a letter inviting applicant developers, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler wrote, “I envision the Broadway Corridor as vibrant, livable, accessible, affordable, inclusive and cohesive,” adding, “I want an iconic design deserving of the transformation this development will bring to the Portland skyline.”
Prosper Portland estimates the development will bring in as much as $1 billion dollars in investment.
Developers have about two months to apply for planning and implementing the project. The city hopes to select a developer by April, 2018 and have a master plan developed by mid-2019.
The main post office is already set to move to a new location new Portland international Airport.
