Coast Guard rescues kayaker in Coos Bay, Oregon

COOS BAY, Ore.-- Coast Guard crews rescued a 58-year-old kayaker from Sunset Bay in Coos Bay, Saturday.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Coos Bay and a rescue swimmer from Station North Bend retrieved and safely transported Evan Merrell to medical personnel from Charleston Fire Department waiting for them at Charleston Marina.

Watchstanders at Station North Bend received the call around 3:30 pm of a kayaker struggling and yelling for help. The aircrew spotted Merrell in the water, clinging to his kayak after falling out while fishing. The rescue swimmer was lowered into the water, and stayed with Merrell until the boat crew arrived, who was able to pull Merrell from the water and treat him for hypothermia.
