Driver arrested after hitting, killing blind pedestrian in North Portland, police say

Blind man struck and killed in N. Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A driver was arrested after hitting and killing a blind man Monday morning on North Columbia Boulevard, according to Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Reke Frank Agee, 61, was struck around 6:20 a.m. on Columbia Boulevard and Interstate Place while using a cane in a crosswalk, Simpson said. Agee was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

The driver, 34-year-old Ryan M. Gawick, stayed at the scene and was later arrested for criminally negligent homicide.

Police believe Gawick ran a red light and struck Agee in a crosswalk.

Allyson Sosa has lived near the intersection for a year and a half and says it’s dangerous.

“There’s cars that will speed all the way down to Columbia. There’s cars that will run lights here on Columbia,” said Sosa. “My kids aren’t allowed out here. Because of that fact. That is absolutely tragic, somethings got to be done.”
