App makes paying for parking easier at Washington Park

PORTLAND, Ore. -- There's a new way to pay for parking in Portland's Washington Park.

It's through an app called PassportParking. You download it using your iPhone or Android, and it's free to the user.

Thursday is the launch of the new program.

Parking pay stations have been around for more than a year, but Portland Parks and Recreation officials are hoping technology will make your trip easier. All you have to do is download the app and enter the zone number, which you'll see on new signs. Type in your parking space number and amount of time you'd like to park. Then, enter your credit card information. The app is a secure site.

You can add more time to your parking from anywhere in the park. And before your time runs out, you will get a notification warning you. You can then add more, from your phone, without having to rush back to a parking meter to do so.

Users can keep track of those payments or print receipts using the PassportParking website.

Parks and Recreation and the Washington Park Transportation Management Association, in a partnership, have entered into a one year trial-run contract with PassportParking.

Every time someone uses the app, it costs the Transportation Management Association an extra 15 cents, which they absorb, and don't charge extra for people using the app.

For one year, they are expecting to pay $15,000.
