YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Yakima City Council voted Tuesday night to consider an ordinance that would give every police patrol officer a take-home cruiser they would use while off duty.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke says it would deter crime by increasing police visibility and allowing off-duty officers to respond quickly to emergencies.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the program to buy 74 new cars would cost $4.7 million. As part of the car deal, the patrol officers' union agreed to give up wage increases for the next two years.
