CAPE MEARES, Ore. -- Police arrested two men suspected of vandalizing at the historic Cape Meares Lighthouse in early January.

Someone fired shots at the light - which is nearly irreplaceable - broke windows and damaged the expensive, specialized lens.

According to OSP Sergeant Todd Hoodenpyl, an unknown vehicle reportedly drove down a blocked maintenance road to the Cape Meares Lighthouse viewing area ten miles west of Tillamook at some time between the afternoon of January 9 and noon on January 10, 2010

Police said several rounds were fired at the lighthouse, breaking 15 windows and several pieces of a historic Fresnel lens. Additional rounds were fired into an active Coast Guard light and surrounding equipment. While driving off the maintenance road, the suspect vehicle caused significant damage to a grassy area. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department estimated damage to be over $50,000 dollars.

Zachary Jon Pyle, 23, and David Reign Wilks, Jr., 26, were arrested Wednesday after police said they found evidence linking the pair to the crime in their Oceanside home.  They faced several charges including felony criminal mischief, criminal trespassing, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.  Both posted bail.

Delicate repair work

Meantime, experts arrived in early February, volunteering their time to repair the damage.

Specialists studied the damage this past weekend and began their plan for repairing it. Technical experts led by Joseph Cocking from Lighthouse Lamp Shop, Inc. were able to recover salvageable glass, reinforce loose sections of the lens, and temporarily seal bullet holes in the exterior window panes.

The lighthouse lenses were very old, with much historical value and were irreplaceable, according to Cape Lookout State Park Manager Pete Marvin.

Cocking's team was donating their time and expertise. They planned to submit a full repair plan, with cost estimates included, sometime in the next two weeks. Friends of Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge also donated $4,000 for the repair crews' travel expenses and raised $12,000 in donations to cover repair costs.

A reward of up to $5,000 has been offered by The Friends of Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible in this case. The U.S. Coast Guard owns the lighthouse, but leases it to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

Cape Meares Lighthouse went into service January 1890. The lighthouse lens was manufactured in Paris, France and shipped around Cape Horn up to Oregon, arriving for installation prior to the date the lighthouse went into service.

Anyone with information to help in the OSP investigation is asked to call the OSP Northern Command Center dispatch at 800-452-7888.

It shows their age in the artical. 23 and 26. There will also probaly be federal charges for the Coast Guard light being shot. CGIS worked with OSP on the investigation. http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/02/oregon_state_police_arrest_two.html

Why were these two morons even released on bail? They should rot in jail for awhile, and then be made to pay for the damage.

Shallow end: Gounds for a law suit? I would love to be in that jury. I believe that once your behind bars you have no right to work in prison so you can rot in there or work for $0.20 an hour.

If a confession is needed make them read the bible while listening to Celine Dion. This harsh but effective technique will be banned-along with water-boarding-if the ACLU finds out...Si Se Puede!!!

Perhaps these two suspects should be made politicians. Our politicians don't seem to have any respect for our history, possessions or our laws. With our politicians behavior I can't figure out where these guys would get the idea that what they did was OK.

Hugo: If you pay them minimum wage, that's one less ground for lawsuit that they have. My main point is make their sentence continued jail time until restitution is made.

Yes! Throw the book at them based on value of the destruction. They deserve it. If there is no such law based on value, there should be. People who destroy things must not own anything themselves. OTHERWISE they'd realize the value of things. Karma will get them once they are violated by someone else; and they will be totally violated in jail. LOSERS.

Hey Shallowend, why pay them minimum wage? How about the going prison rate of $0.20 per hour times 8 hours a day. Let's see $1.60 per day divided by $50,000 in damages equals 31,250 days in prison. That's over 85 years in prison for us regular folks. That should just about take care of those two. Unless their supposed to pay for their room and board, but I don't have enough data to find out how long that will take. Sorry....

So sorry but "throw the book at them"? It seems to me that if people were treated more harshly the first time they do something stupid like damaging property whether or not it has a historical value or not we would find that there is less of it, remember scared straight? But we in Ore do not want to traumatize our youth so we let them grow up to be thugs and send them to prison where they can learn to be worse for the most part the tax payer pays for their shrinks, meals and everything else they need and want. Hells bells we cannot keep a murder or sex offender in jail and you all act like a death penalty should be enacted. It is a building it should not have been defaced. $5,000 grand to catch the idiot, wow glad we have money for that although it be donations. Must mean none of your hands are out to the government to feed and cloth your poor or to fix up damaged property of others. In the grand scheme of things this is nonsense.

Find, convict and sentence as follows: incarceration at your own expense (you will work on a chain gang at minimum wage) with any excess earnings submitted towards full restitution. Once you pay for all your damages (including interest), you go free.

Profile: male, probably under 40. Either under 16 and "just havin' fun" or else old enough to have had alterctaions with the local or federal government, and seeking some sort of strange "revenge."

also Agree with Hoss761, but take a more practical approach. Maybe we can all express our outrage if an account can be set up to not only help repair the lighthouse, but a separate account to contribute to the reward leading to arrest and conviction!! I'm heading to the bank now. And speaking of conviction can't this be prosecuted as a federal terrorism crime as an act of war, as they did fire on an active US Coast Guard light. I hope the federal Gov't is using all its resources to investigate this. Enough with vandalism seen as a childish prank .... Hang'm

I agree with hoss761 IF they find the person/s responsable they will get a 1-6 month in jail "a slap on the wrist for the damages done" I feel that all of there property should be taken "house, truck, guns, kitchen sink" and sold on e-bay to PAY FOR THE REPAIRS like the "john cars and drug dealer stuff" take it and sell it make them hurt.

We visited this lighthouse just this last September. The heat generated from a hazy sunny day reflecting off the lenses it tremendous! They are incredible, and it makes me sad and vindictive towards the one(s) that did this. I hope they catch the perps, and apply a sentence appropriate to the amount of historic value they destroyed. I doubt it though...probably just a slap on the wrist. How about a human piniata hanging from the rail of the lighthouse? No blindfolds....I'd volunteer for that.....

It is sad that the youth of today have no respect for history or property. Guess if it was up to zirchonears7879 we should not have anything historical left for future generations to learn about and see. Very sad that idiots like that have no respect or loyalty to our country and what helped build it.

Way to go stupid ruin something of historical value, and by the way they are right about the Fresnel Lens, it's a special type of glass that takes an expert to make it. I think the last lenses were made in WW 2.
