VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) -- A 19-year-old sex offender who was attending Prairie High School in Vancouver pleaded guilty to child rape for having sex with a 14-year-old student.

Jeremiah C. Thompson faces about a year in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 7 in Clark County Superior Court.

The Columbian reports (http://is.gd/7hScBk ) he pleaded guilty Aug. 8 in a plea deal with prosecutors who dropped an aggravating factor that could have given him a longer sentence.

Thompson was a senior in April when he had sex with the girl, who was two years younger than Washington's age of consent, which is 16. The school staff knew of Thompson's criminal history but they said privacy laws prevented them from telling parents.
