SALEM, Ore. -- The bodies of two men found inside a submerged car in the Pudding River Monday have been identified by police.
The driver was identified as 21-year-old Luke Christopher Jackson of Forest Grove. The passenger was 20-year-old Tyler Ray Libel of Woodburn.
Marion County deputy Don Thomson said a witness saw a the red Honda Civic go off Mount Angel Gervais Road Northeast into the Pudding River around 3:45 p.m.
Witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling westbound at a speed estimated in excess of 100 mph. The car hit a large tree and landed in the water, which was flowing rapidly at a depth from 10 to 20 feet, according to sheriff's deputies.
Police and the Newberg Dive Teams were called in right away.
The road was closed as a towing truck and crews pulled the red sedan out of the river.
