PORTLAND -- Two men suspected in a Southeast Portland carjacking and nearby robbery Saturday night were arrested after attempting to flee on foot, police said.

Just before 9 a.m. police were called to the report of a carjacking in the 7800 block of SE Center Street, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.

A 19-year-old and three of her friends were at Essex Park when two men approached them. One of the men demanded her car keys at gunpoint, and she handed them over, Simpson said.

Soon afterward a tavern was robbed nearby, at SE 80th Avenue and SE Powell Boulevard. Officers responding to both calls saw the stolen car and pursued it to the area of SE 97th Avenue and SE Francis Street, where the suspects got out of the car and ran.

"The driver, 26-year-old Thomas Riffenburg (pictured, right) was pursued by officers on foot and caught and arrested," Simpson said. "Officers set up a perimeter and called for a police canine and located and arrested the second suspect, 31-year-old Joe Krieg."

Officers recovered the gun and investigators said the two men were suspects in both crimes. No one was injured.
