PORTLAND -- A TriMet bus driver is being hailed as a hero after coming to a woman's rescue Friday night.

Jeff Grimes was taking passengers down Hall Boulevard, near Washington Square Mall at around 11:30 Friday morning, when he saw a woman who had been hit by a car.

The woman's leg was badly damaged and she was losing blood fast. Grimes took his belt off and made a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

He then held the woman's hand and told her everything would be okay. He told KGW the woman was in shock.

“She kept asking how she was, and I was afraid to say anything to her,” Grimes said. “So I told her everything was okay.”

The woman was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The driver that hit her was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Grimes went on to finish his shift.
