PORTLAND, Ore. -- Teachers will probably be allowed to wear religious clothing sometime in the near future, according to state House Speaker Dave Hunt.

Hunt, a Democrat from Gladstone, told the Oregonian that a current ban on wearing religious garb is overdue for a change. He said he planned to introduce a law in February, when lawmakers convene, that would repeal the 1923 law.

Every lawmaker in Oregon recently received a letter from state schools Superintendent Susan Castillo and the state labor commissioner, Brad Avakian, asking that they support dropping the ban for teachers.
