ALBANY, Ore. -- An Albany man drowned while swimming in the Calapooia River Saturday, officials said.
An Albany Fire Department diver pulled 21-year-old Robert Kroesing from river late Saturday afternoon, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Kroesing was trying to cross the river near its confluence with the Willamette River and ended up underwater, according to Capt. Greg Ridler of the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
The diver found him about 6 feet below the surface of the water roughly 20 minutes after rescuers arrived. He was not wearing a flotation device, Ridler said.
