SALEM -- The man accused of shooting a Marion County sheriff's deputy last week has been identified as 25-year-old Cody Marshall Edwards of Dallas, Ore, police said.

Edwards is accused of injuring Deputy Jim Buchholz in a shootout east of Salem on Dec. 6. Buchholz was taken by LifeFlight to the hospital and was released on Dec. 9.

Sheriff's deputies and Salem police chasing a stolen car confronted Edwards in field off of Sunnyview Road Northeast, according to Lt. Dave Okada of the Salem Police Department.

Okada said that officer Jason Bricker fired at Edwards during the incident.

Edwards was injured and taken to the hospital but has been released and is now custody at Marion County jail, said Okada.

The investigation is ongoing.
