THE DALLES, Ore. -- A policeman from The Dalles was wounded and a suspect was killed after police tried to question a man in connection with a rape investigation in Wishram, Wash.

The Dalles Police Chief Jay Waterbury said the officer's injuries were not serious. He was taken to Mid-Columbia Hospital and was expected to be released Thursday. Waterbury did not release the officer's name but said he is 42 and has been with the force for 17 years.

"It's upsetting that I have an officer injured," Waterbury said. "You'd like to never see an officer injured in their career, but sometimes it happens."

The incident began as part of an ongoing investigation into a reported rape days earlier in The Dalles. Police hoped to question a man about the case and learned he lived in Wishram, according to the Klickitat County sheriff's office.

Oregon state troopers and Klickitat County deputies went to a home in 100 block of Main Street shortly after 8 p.m. A man was spotted through a window. The officers identified themselves and asked the man to come out.

As he neared the door, officers saw him holding a handgun. Rather than come out the front, he ran out the back, where officers from The Dalles were positioned. After a short foot chase, the man shot the officer from The Dalles, who returned fire.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thursday morning deputies and police officers visited their wounded colleague the hospital. He was scheduled to be released in good condition Thursday afternoon. He was placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
