FLORENCE -- Siuslaw Fire Department crews rappelled down to a suicidal man Friday evening, trapped on a cliff after a failed suicide jump.
Oregon State Police had spotted the man's pickup truck just off U.S. 101 north of Florence after the Lane County Sheriff's Office issued an alert about a missing and despondent person.
The sheriff's office determined through cellphone signals that the man may be near the Sea Lion Caves attraction. The pickup was spotted near an overlook parking lot just south of there about 10:14 p.m. Friday.
Bushes had trapped the man upside down about 75 to 100 feet down a 1,000 drop. Rescuers said had he not been stopped by the bushes, he certainly would have fallen to his death into the ocean.
The man was taken to Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence. His name was not released. He was with family, who had arrived at the parking lot at about the same time state police spotted the pickup.
