PORTLAND -- A snowboarder lost for hours on Mt. Hood Saturday was found by crews after his friends called for help.

Dae Lim was part of a group snowboarding Saturday afternoon. They went out of bounds and, as they were heading back to the trail, he was separated from his group.

His friends tried to find him for about three hours before called for help.

Rescuers were able to contact him by cell phone, according to Sgt. James Rhodes with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

"With the help of a Korean interpreter, searchers provided him instructions to remain where he was and await rescue," Rhodes said. "Lim was not injured and had no medical conditions. He was dressed for skiing but otherwise unprepared to remain in the wilderness overnight."

A friend explained that Lim used skills learned in his Korean military training to stay warm and find his way back toward the resort.

“So he started jumping up and down and doing exercises,” said Daniel Yoom. “Once he warmed up a little bit he looked for a high point, and climbed up a hill, and then he realized the lights from Timberline and Ski bowl were in the opposite direction from which he was walking in."

Lim changed direction and eventually ran into rescue crews.

Ski patrol members said the event served as an important reminder to be prepared with proper gear on the mountain, and to let people know where you're going.
