PORTLAND -- Portland's own version of 'Carmageddon' continues on Interstate 5 this weekend, but there will be a bit relief for drivers approaching the freeway from Interstate 84, transportation officials said.

The one-mile stretch of I-5 northbound that runs from the Marquam Bridge to the Fremont Bridge will be closed for maintenance from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, according to Don Hamilton of the Oregon Dept. of Transportation.

But this weekend the I-84 ramp to I-5 southbound and the city center exit will remain open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, he said. The change is expected to ease traffic on the Banfield inbound during those hours.

Hamilton said area traffic will still be congested in the area all weekend.

"Drivers should avoid I-5 south and adjacent freeways or plan for significant delays," he said.

The southbound lanes were closed for two weekends in July. After some traffic control changes following the first closure, Hamilton said the second closure went much more smoothly.

The northbound lanes will be closed again August 17-20 and August 24-27.
