BONNEVILLE DAM, Ore. -- Fish and Wildlife officials have killed the sixth California sea lion of the season at the Bonneville Dam.

The animals prey on endangered salmon and steelhead runs heading up the Columbia River.

Last year, biologists received a federal waiver to kill sea lions tagged and registered as "repeat offenders."

The waiver stipulates how many sea lions can be euthanized or relocated. Biologists are allowed to administer a lethal injection or kill the sea lions by gunshot.

Last year, 11 sea lions were killed. Others were relocated to zoos and aquariums across the nation.

This year, as many as 64 sea lions could be euthanized.

VEGANPEACE: ENOUGH WITH YOUR STUPID JUBBERISH! Have you ever heard of survival of the fittest??? or are you going to disrupt the natural course of nature? People kill to eat! Not only just for Native Americans but for all! Killing these sea lions is just to save the salmon fishermen risk their lives and who put their delicious catch in front of me to eat!

I just see this as another Broken piece of Government that is always screwing up and doing half measures. The Columbia River needs to completly free of these Sea Lions and Seals, and that is what needs to be done..NOW- why wait and lose all the Salmon and Sturgeon to an invasive species that is determined to wipe out or fish resource. For you Tree Huggers, go to North Korea and run your mouths, for the Liberals and Obama-ites- who are Screaming about the removal of these killers of our fish, go grow your own food in California and let US REAL People handle this issue the Old School way and move on. Sheesh, what happened to My Oregon??? Feels like a Sick San Francisco up here.

My goodness- what a mix of comments. Veganpeace - you again with your jibberish (SHUT UP!) - same with the rest of you who are protesting against getting rid of these lazy pigs (sea lions), sitting there just waiting for the salmon to be trapped. If they would get their fat asses out in the ocean and have to work for their food that would be different. Other things are "harvested", for human use so why not sea lions?

Ok, enough already! There is no reason to NOT KILL THEM-the Sea Lions and Seals. The twisted Tree Huggers and PETA CRIMINALS and Obama-ites, just want to stir up Hate and trouble. Not one Human on this Planet-let alone Liberal Lost Oregon or Obamaportland will actually miss "1" of those Sea Lions or Seals. They can scream as loud as they want-and they do-because they don't have jobs and they want to feel productive in Something in their Lives. Get A Grip!! Let's put a 25$ hunting tag on all these filthy beasts and make some money for Oregon Food Bank. Or, just build a Custom Harley Chopper and get out in the Wind and find yourself,!!!!!!

Just so you Granola's know.... there are no more native fish.... all the fish that come up the Columbia are planted hatchery fish..... fish that the taxpayers bought and paid for.... fish that are there to replenish the numbers to even a fraction of what they were 200 years ago. The fish are paid for buy government grants and through funds collected from the DFW... that money comes from fishermen who buy the licenses and tags.... it's a buisness....just like any other. Sea Lions from California post up there and eat the easy meal.... then they eventually go back to california and lay up on docks.... destroying them too... and then they reproduce and the offspring follow mom back to Oregon to kill more fish.... It's like the sign says at the Zoo... "don't feed the wild animals" so why not kill all the Sea Lions and get them out of "OUR" river... that way the fish will have a chance one day to be Native.... and just maybe we can catch one.... one day!

These administrators don't use common sense. They take them away and kill them and then can't kill the Stellar. If they would kill them in the open and dump them overboard there, the others including the Stellar would see them and leave as they would associate the location with danger. These animals are smart and learn quickly and the problem would go somewhere else but wouldn't be occurring at the throat of the funnel where the fish congregate and stall while figuring out where to go amid the confused water.

Dont get me wrong i love my power in fact with out it i would not be able to make this post. But maybe just maybe it US the humans the residents of Oregon who have dammed up our rivers for power who has caused some of this issue with the Seals. It should not matter if they are the Californian seal or not since if you do research you find that during el nino years Oregon will get them no matter what. Has anyone checked with the Native Americans about seals here in Oregon on how far back they go? Why don't we care if the bears eat the salmon? often times they dont eat all the salmon when they catch sometimes it gets away and is also not use able by humans, no i am not a Peta person or any of the like, i am just a person who believes since as humans we have the ability to be logical and reason Seals dont they act in the way they where meant too. we just need to learn to get along. as we encroach in animals homes we all must remember that they where there before we built our homes.

does anyone happen to remember how many millions of salmon there were before us idiot white people turned the columbia into a series of lakes???? Does anyone remember how the loss of a few thousand salmon had no effect on the overall survival of the wild species.... Does anyone remember when people werent so self centered as to think the solution for our attempts at re-creating the way the planet works is to further modify it's processes..... Let the Planet work the way it's supposed to, you friggin morons!!!!!!

How many of you tree hugging granolas have ever watched a seal/sea lion grab a fish and just eat the belly then move on? Are you telling me that you would rather us not try to save the fish in their NATURAL water and let the seal/sea lions flourish in NON NATIVE waters? There are so many seals/sea lions on the river that it is not funny! There have been counts that placed as many as 5000 just from Longview to Astoria!!! Oh and by the way, eskimoes like to eat seal/sea lion, seen em do it!

Except for Native Americans, whose land was robbed by Bush/Cheney/Reagan and Bo Derek, no non-human has the right to kill any fish. Although we in the PGRSV Burroughs of the globe would prefer that the California Sea Lion begin eating vegan only, we also understand that evolution is a slow process. Nonetheless, the barbaric massacres of these delightful creatures at the hands of the insidious Neo-KKKon Fish/Game department is a crime which defies parallel. Those participating in the Armageddon against nature must be immediate located, arrested and tried by the United Nations in Den Hagg for their savage attempts of exterminating one of Goddess's most benign creations. This is also the time for Co-Presidents Shelly and Barry Harold Soetoro to order the closure of the eco-destroying hydroelectric dams which are a direct slap in the face of the Kyoto Treaty, the Greenpeace Mission Statement, and more importantly, the admonishments of Oscar winner and Nobel Laureate Al Gore.

There seems to be enough to go around so in my opinion this is uncalled for.. By Abby Haight, The Oregonian December 11, 2009, 10:30AM Columbia River fisheries managers are predicting the largest return of spring chinook salmon since 1938, even after adjusting the model they had used for predictions in past years. The projected run of 470,000 spring chinook is a big leap from last spring's final count of 169,300 adult fish. Using seven models, the technical committee saw a range of predicted run sizes from 366,000 to 528,000 adults, and chose 470,000 as an average. An accurate forecast is critical to fulfill treaty obligations, conservation mandates and set commercial and recreational harvest levels, said Stuart Ellis, fisheries scientist for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission and chairman of the technical committee that produced the forecast.

Ok I'll chime in here for a minute... The California Sea Lion has been a big problem for years at Bonniville.. they are thick in there and they eat salmon because they are easy prey.... they aren't hunting...it's not the circle of life... it's not nature.... those things are destroying nature. This would't be the problem it is today if it weren't for granola eaters sticking up for the rights of some Sea Lion trying to get a free meal. They don't belong here, they aren't native to our area, they come here year after year because someone plants fish in the river that we fishermen pay to plant... so we can catch them and so they can return to the strong species they once were. An adult Sea Lion can kill hundreds of Salmon in a week... they don't eat them completely.... they just eat the stomachs of the fish... the eggs and fat.... The DFW is doing the right thing for once... just doing it too slowly....

Thats just messed up! Another problem completely caused and blown out of control by man, then blamed hastily on another species! Can we not see that the problem is caused by the unchecked human population increase and our need to do unnatural things to perpetuate our own existence? If any other species was reproducing at the rate of humans there would be an outcry!

It is so wrong that these natural creatures are being targeted. Fishermen kill over three times the amount that the sea lions eat naturally. This makes me so angry.
