SALEM -- A semi driver was hospitalized after his truck collided with a train in Salem.

Allen Parks, 56, of Amity, was leaving a loading dock at 3635 Brooklake Road N with two trailers full of ammonium sulfate feritilizer when his truck was hit by a Portland Western Freight train, according to Don Thomson of the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

He said Parks had failed to yield to the train and was crossing the tracks at about 25 mph just after 10 a.m.

"The conductor of the train, Matthew Astle, 38, said he was unable to stop in time," Thomson said. "The impact overturned the truck and trailers, and caused a minor diesel and pellet fertilizer spill. The crossing is on private property and is not controlled by a signal device."

Parks was taken to Salem Hospital with head and leg injuries. His condition was not released No other injuries were reported.

Marion County fire crews responded to clean up the spills.
