SALEM – A Salem man was hurt badly and stranded on a mountain road near Clear Lake after he tripped in the dark and took a nasty tumble late Wednesday.
Jerry Croft fractured his face and his clothes were soaked after the fall. Croft managed to crawl to his truck, but when he got there the battery was dead.
Several hours later, a couple from The Dalles spotted Croft and called rescuers.
“It was a lifesaver. I didn't think anyone else would come up there. I thought for sure I would expire. If not from some wound that I had, then definitely hypothermia,” Croft said.
Croft wants others to learn from his mistakes and make sure to go into the wilderness prepared.
