PORTLAND -- Drivers were warned to expect delays during a closure of Southeast Powell Boulevard this weekend, and asked to avoid the construction area if possible.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, the street was be closed between SE 17th Avenue and SE 21st Avenue for construction of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project, according to TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch.

"The closure is necessary to allow crews to demolish the Powell Boulevard overpass and prepare for construction of two new structures: One for the new MAX line and the other for motorists, bikes and pedestrians," Fetsch said.

Drivers can use SE McLoughlin Boulevard, SE Holgate and SE Cesar Chavez boulevards as a detour, and should expect delays throughout the weekend.
