PORTLAND – A worker at a Southeast Portland deli wrestled with an armed robbery suspect Tuesday, knocking away his gun and sending him running out the door, police said.
The attempted robbery occurred around 3 p.m. in Nick's Double-Up Deli at 8028 Southeast Powell.
The deli worker told officers the suspect was armed with a handgun and demanded money, but he refused to hand it over.
“The victim told police that he didn't give the suspect any money and that they struggled over the handgun, causing the suspect to drop a loaded handgun magazine on the ground before running out the door,” said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.
He added that two customers also helped during the struggle with the suspect.
The suspect was described as a white man in his mid-30s, about 5-foot-nine, with a medium build and wearing dark clothing. Officers searched the neighborhood for him, but found nothing.
The deli worker’s hand was injured during the struggle but it did not require hospital care, Simpson said.
Anyone with information that may help investigators was urged to call police at (503) 823-0405.
