PORTLAND – Investigators determined a fire at a carwash in Southeast Portland on Monday was caused by fireworks.
Just after 10 p.m., a two-alarm fire badly burned a carwash at the Shell gas station at 10725 SE 82nd Avenue.
Heavy black smoke was billowing out of the carwash, which is separate from the main gas station. Firefighters extinguished the flames, secured the facility and treated two workers on scene for minor injuries, said Brandon Paxton with the Clackamas Fire District.
After investigation the scene, firefighters determined the fire was caused by a firework that was thrown in the carwash and ignited a brush, Paxton said.
Firefighters are continuing their investigation with the help of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information was asked to call 503-742-2660.
To avoid fires this 4th of July, Clackamas Fire urges the public to use only legal fireworks and to make sure they are put in a metal bucket of water.
