PORTLAND --- A story about the Oregon Zoo and its handling of news that a newly-born elephant calf is owned by a elephant rental company reached national airwaves Wednesday morning.

The Today show broadcast a segment on the birth last week of Rose-Tu's baby girl.

Only after a Seattle Times story pointing out that the calf is owned by a California company called Have Trunk Will Travel did many zoo patrons learn of a contract detailing ownership rights.

The furor also was picked by up Jim Romenesko's media blog, read religiously by print journalists nationwide. It outlined the stark contrast between the Seattle Times coverage of the Oregon Zoo elephants and stories in the Oregonian of the birth.
