PORTLAND – One man died and a woman was taken by emergency helicopter to the hospital after a vehicle rolled over on Interstate 205 Saturday afternoon, police said.
Three people were reportedly in the vehicle when it crashed on the southbound lanes of the interstate north of Stafford Road shortly after 1 p.m., said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
Patricia Ponce, 37, of Salem was driving the Nissan Pathfinder when the vehicle's right rear tire blew out causing it to roll numerous times onto the center median where it came to rest on it's wheels, Hastings said.
Juventino Viramontes, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, Hastings said.
Ponce was seriously injured and taken by LifeFlight to Oregon Health & Science University. She is in critical condition.
Saul Garcia, 39, of Salem was taken by ambulance to OHSU. He is Ponce's husband and is in serious condition, Hastings said.
Southbound lanes were blocked for more than half an hour. Oregon State Police opened one lane around 2 p.m.
Drivers were advised to take alternate routes if traveling south including Interstate 5 and Highway 99E, police said.
