MT. HOOD -- A man and his dog were aided up a steep hillside near Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood late Monday after the man called for help retrieving his dog.
Alan Rosenfeld says he made a mistake not having his Golden Retriever Ranger on leash as they descended into the steep Zig Zag Canyon, about three miles from the lodge.
Rosenfeld said he couldn't retrieve his dog, and a short time later he also got stuck on the steep slope. He called for help around 3:45 p.m. Rescuers later described it as a 40 to 50 degree slope.
He said the pair had been on the trail before and he should have known better. Rosenfeld also said he was a bit embarrassed, and very thankful for the rescuers and hikers who helped him.
"Bottom line is it is best to keep your dog on a leash when descending Zig Zag Canyon, and Ranger was off leash at the time," Rosenfeld said.
Rosenfeld and Ranger arrived back uninjured at the Timberline Lodge about 10 p.m.
