OLYMPIA – A bill proposed in Washington state would ban teenagers from using tanning salons without a prescription from a doctor.
Tanning salons currently face no regulations from the state but many salons do require a parent’s signature for underage customers.
However the proposed bill would mean that even a parent’s note would not matter. The only way a teen could legally use a tanning bed would be with a prescription from a doctor.
“I think that should be up to the parents. If they want us to have a parent's written permission slip, I'm okay with that, but I think it should be up to the parents, not up to the government,” said Stacey Kindschuh, who owns a tanning salon in Washington state.
So when might a doctor prescribe tanning? Some dermatologists recommend it for patients suffering from psoriasis.
