HILLSBORO, Ore. – A 23-year-old woman was hit and killed early Saturday morning on Southwest Hillsboro Highway near Farmington.

Melissa Bernard of Portland was reportedly hitchhiking in a dark rural area just south of Southwest Burkhalter Road just after midnight when she was hit by 42-year-old Owen Moyco from Cornelius, said Sgt. Bob Ray with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Bernard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moyco told deputies he was driving around 55 mph when he saw Bernard at the last second and tried to swerve out of the way, but was unable to avoid hitting her, Ray said.

Moyco was not injured in the crash and called 9-1-1. Deputies do not anticipate filing charges.
