PORTLAND -- A group of Southeast Portland parents said they're outraged after a sex offender treatment clinic opened up in their neighborhood.
Parents said they weren’t notified that the Whole Systems Counseling & Consultation Clinic was coming to the neighborhood.
The clinic used to operate in the Sellwood area, but was forced to leave after neighbors complained it was too close to a school.
The clinic is now located near Southeast 125th Avenue and Stark Street, which parents say is two blocks from a bus stop.
The clinic’s owner, Johneen Manno, estimated about 140 sex offenders were treated at the former Sellwood location, and none of their convictions prohibited them from being near schools.
Matt Getman lives near the new southeast clinic and said he doesn’t like the idea of it being in his neighborhood.
“I don’t think it belongs right here next to the children,” Getman said. “I just think that there could be a different place, maybe not so close to the school district or the schools.”
Parents scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the David Douglas District Office.
Manno initially planned to attend the meeting to answer questions, but has since backed out after she reportedly received threats.
