PORTLAND -- Portland Police Chief Mike Reese announced that Mike Kuykendall will resign as director of services because of unprofessional text messages.
In a statement e-mailed Friday, Reese said Kuykendall sent unprofessional text messages about another member of the police bureau from his personal phone to a subordinate's personal phone.
Kuykendall in the same release said he was trying to use humor to provide support to someone who had come to him with a work-related issue. He said he deeply regrets his actions.
The director of services is a civilian job that oversees the bureau's fiscal, records and support services divisions.
Kuykendall had been on the job since 2010. He is a former Multnomah County deputy district attorney and has been a member of the chief's rock band -- The Usual Suspects.
