PORTLAND - A spokesman for the Portland Fire Bureau said responding to mass casualty scenarios is something they train for regularly.
”It is certainly a good reminder to us how real that possibility is in any of our cities in this day and age,” said Lt. Rich Chatman, referencing the explosions at the Boston Marathon. Chatman also said the Fire Bureau has response plans in place for big events like the Portland Marathon. ”It’s part of the preparation we do as emergency responders,” he said.
Firefighters said some of the biggest challenges in catastrophic situations are: dealing with the chaos, getting to and treating and victims and communicating.
Chatman said the next mass casualty training is scheduled for May.
