PORTLAND -- A Portland couple charged with the murder of their five-year-old son pleaded not guilty Wednesday in a brief court appearance.
Kalman Eteuati, 25, and Valisha Eteuati, 26, were indicted Tuesday by a grand jury on one count each of murder. They will go to trial on Aug. 9.
Mahanarye Noa, 5, was brought to the hospital June 14 by the parents, who said he had suffered a fall. He died a short time later and the hospital contacted police.
The medical examiner determined that the child had died as a result of battered child syndrome and his death was ruled a homicide.
Police said the couple's three other children have been placed in the care of a relative.
Kalman and Valisha remain in jail without bail.
Little Mahanarye's funeral was Monday and next week, flags across the city will be lowered in his honor.
