PORTLAND, Ore. -- A spirit of cooperation took over the encampment for a few hours Saturday morning, as the focus shifted to cleaning up the parks and helping homeless people get out of harms way before the midnight deadline.

“We have outreach workers here talking to people who need shelter and connecting them to the services they’re eligible for,” said Portland Commissioner Nick Fish, who was helping dozens of people take down their tents.

Occupy Portland organizers even helped police clear out garbage and makeshift shelters.

"I’ve really put activism on hold for a day and this is really to help street people find a comfortable place to stay, where they won’t have to deal with police intervention tonight,” said organizer Micaiha Dutt.
