PORTLAND – A prolific Portland pickpocket who was arrested Thursday and accused of stealing people’s credit and debit cards and using them to buy gift cards and designer handbags appeared in court Friday.
Cheryl Golphin, 46, was arrested on 17 felony charges of theft and fraud. Prosecutors said just last month she pleaded guilty in a similar case in Washington County but was out of custody pending her sentencing hearing.
According to Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police, detectives learned Golphin would approach victims in cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, and grocery stores and slyly steal credit cards before returning victims’ wallets and purses without them even knowing.
Loretta Coolidge said she was ripped off at the Bollywood Theater on Northeast Alberta Street. The suspect who stole her credit cards racked up nearly $1,000 in purchases before she realized her cards were gone.
Detectives believe Golphin could be involved in several other cases in Portland. She was booked in the Multnomah County Jail and was arraigned Friday.
