PORTLAND -- Dozens of Parkrose High School students protested proposed teacher layoffs Friday morning outside the school.
Students skipped class and picketed with handmade signs during morning traffic.
They oppose a recent budget proposal drafted by the district’s superintendent that would include lay-offs of seven teachers across the district. The proposed budget would also impact the PACE alternative learning program.
Students said one of their teachers, the head of the high school’s art department, is among those facing layoffs.
Several students said they were told if they skipped class, they would be banned from the Spring Prom. Students still took part in the demonstration, but there was no word from the school on whether they would be reprimanded.
The protest was expected to last until just before 3 p.m. Friday.
